[327] 10. Rise up! Sit up! What good to you is sleep? For what sleep can there be for the afflicted, pierced by the dart (salla), wounded? Rise up! Sit up! Train firmly for peace (santi). Let not (the King of Death, maccurājā), knowing you to be heedless (pamatta), delude you who have come under his sway. That to which devas and humans, in need, stand attached — cross over this attachment (visattikā); let not the moment (khaṇa) pass you by,[1] for those who have let the moment pass sorrow, consigned to hell (niraya). Heedlessness (pamāda) is dust; from heedlessness[2] dust follows in its train. By heedfulness (appamāda), by true knowledge (vijjā), one should draw out[3] the dart from oneself.
