[328] 11. "Do you not despise the wise man from living together with him constantly? Is he who holds aloft the torch for humankind honored by you?" [Venerable Rāhula:] "I do not despise the wise man from living together with him constantly; he who holds aloft the torch for humankind is ever honored by me." [The Blessed One:] "Having abandoned the five cords of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa), so pleasing in form, delighting the mind, and having gone forth from home out of faith (saddhā), be one who makes an end of suffering (dukkha). Associate with good friends, and resort to a remote lodging, secluded, with little noise; be moderate in food. Robes, almsfood, requisites, and lodging: do not conceive craving (taṇhā) for these; do not come back to the world again. Be restrained in the Pātimokkha and in the five sense faculties; let mindfulness (sati) directed to the body be present in you; abound in disenchantment. Avoid the sign (nimitta) that is beautiful, bound up with lust; develop the mind (citta) upon the foul (asubha), unified and well concentrated. And develop the signless (animitta); cast off the latent tendency to conceit (māna). Then, by the breakthrough of conceit, you will wander at peace." Thus indeed did the Blessed One constantly instruct the Venerable Rāhula with these verses. The Rāhula Sutta, the Eleventh, is concluded. [Variant readings noted in this edition: ¹ ² Ma. and Yu. read "ukkādhāro"; ³ there is also the reading "patthañca"; ⁴ also read "taṇhaṃ mākāsi."] The Vaṅgīsa Sutta, the Twelfth of the Second Chapter, the Cūḷavagga, in the Suttanipāta
