[329] 12. Thus have I heard.
On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Āḷavī, at the Aggāḷava Shrine (cetiya). Now on that occasion the elder (thera) named Nigrodhakappa, the preceptor (upajjhāya) of the Venerable Vaṅgīsa, had recently attained final Nibbāna (parinibbuta) at the Aggāḷava Shrine. Then, while the Venerable Vaṅgīsa was alone in seclusion (paṭisallāna), this reflection arose in his mind: "Has my preceptor attained final Nibbāna, or has he not attained final Nibbāna?" Then, in the evening, the Venerable Vaṅgīsa emerged from seclusion and approached the Blessed One; having approached, he paid homage to the Blessed One and sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Vaṅgīsa said this to the Blessed One: "Here, venerable sir, while I was alone in seclusion, this reflection arose in my mind: 'Has my preceptor attained final Nibbāna, or has he not attained final Nibbāna?'" Then the Venerable Vaṅgīsa rose from his seat, arranged his robe over one shoulder, raised his joined palms in reverential salutation toward the Blessed One, and addressed the Blessed One in verse (gāthā):
