[373] 7. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One, wandering on tour among the Aṅguttarāpans together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus — twelve and a half hundred (1,250) bhikkhus¹ — arrived at a market town of the Aṅguttarāpans named Āpaṇa.

Keṇiya the matted-hair ascetic (jaṭila) heard: "Sirs, the ascetic Gotama, the son of the Sakyans, gone forth from a Sakyan family, wandering on tour among the Aṅguttarāpans together with a great Saṅgha of bhikkhus, with 1,250 bhikkhus, has arrived, it is said, at Āpaṇa. And of that Master Gotama such a fair report of fame has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One — accomplished (arahaṃ), fully self-enlightened (sammāsambuddho), perfect in true knowledge and conduct (vijjācaraṇasampanno), well-gone (sugato), knower of the world (lokavidū), unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed (anuttaro purisadammasārathi), teacher of devas and humans (satthā devamanussānaṃ), enlightened (buddho), blessed (bhagavā). Having realized it himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), he makes known this world with its devas, Māra, and Brahmā, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans. He teaches the Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with its meaning and its phrasing; he reveals the holy life (brahmacariya) that is utterly complete and pure.' Good indeed is the sight of such accomplished ones."
Then Keṇiya the matted-hair ascetic approached the Blessed One; having approached, he exchanged greetings with the Blessed One, and when the courteous and memorable talk was concluded, he sat down at one side. As Keṇiya the matted-hair ascetic sat at one side, the Blessed One instructed, urged, roused, and gladdened him with a talk on the Dhamma.
Then Keṇiya the matted-hair ascetic — instructed, urged, roused, and gladdened by the Blessed One with the talk on the Dhamma — said this to the Blessed One: "May Master Gotama, together with the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, consent to accept tomorrow's meal from me."
