[604] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One, while wandering on tour among the Aṅguttarāpans together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, with twelve hundred and fifty bhikkhus, arrived at a market town of the Aṅguttarāpans named Āpaṇa. Keṇiya the matted-hair ascetic (jaṭila) heard: "Sirs, the ascetic Gotama, the Sakyan son who has gone forth from the Sakyan clan, while wandering on tour among the Aṅguttarāpans together with a large Saṅgha of bhikkhus, with twelve hundred and fifty bhikkhus, has arrived at Āpaṇa. And of that Master Gotama such a fair report has spread abroad: 'Thus indeed is that Blessed One: an arahant, a perfectly awakened one (sammāsambuddha), accomplished in true knowledge (vijjā) and conduct, a Well-Gone One (sugata), a knower of the world, an unsurpassed trainer of persons to be tamed, a teacher of devas and humans, an Awakened One (buddha), a Blessed One (bhagavā). Having realized it for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), he makes known this world with its devas, its Māras, and its Brahmās, this generation with its ascetics and brahmins, its devas and humans. He teaches the Dhamma that is good in the beginning, good in the middle, and good in the end, with its meaning and its phrasing; he reveals the holy life (brahmacariya) that is utterly complete and pure.' Good indeed is the sight of arahants such as that."
