[393] Bhikkhus, if there should be those who ask, "Could there be right contemplation of the dyads (sammādvayatānupassanā) in yet another way?" they should be told, "There could be." And how could there be? "Whatever suffering (dukkha) originates, all of it has ignorance (avijjā) as its condition": this is one contemplation. "But with the remainderless fading away (virāga) and cessation (nirodha) of that very ignorance, there is no origination of suffering": this is the second contemplation. For one who thus rightly contemplates the dyads … Then the Teacher said this further:
Those who go again and again to the round of birth and death (jātimaraṇasaṃsāra),
to existence thus and existence otherwise — that course (gati) is due to ignorance alone.
For this ignorance is the great delusion (mahāmoha), which has been permanent for so long;
but those beings who have arrived at true knowledge (vijjā) do not go to renewed existence (punabbhava).
