[47] 10. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion Bāhiya Dārucīriya was residing at Suppāraka on the shore of the ocean; he was honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, and was a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodging, and medicinal requisites for the sick. Then, while Bāhiya Dārucīriya was alone in seclusion, this reflection arose in his mind: "Whoever in the world are arahants (arahanta) or have entered upon the path to arahantship (arahattamagga), I am one of them." Then a deity (devatā) who had formerly been a blood relative of Bāhiya Dārucīriya, compassionate and desiring his welfare, having known with its own mind the reflection in Bāhiya Dārucīriya's mind, approached Bāhiya Dārucīriya; and having approached, said this to Bāhiya Dārucīriya: "Bāhiya, you are certainly neither an arahant nor one who has entered upon the path to arahantship; you do not even possess that way of practice (paṭipadā) by which you might be an arahant or one who has entered upon the path to arahantship." "Then who now, in the world with its devas, are arahants or have entered upon the path to arahantship?" "There is, Bāhiya, in the northern districts a city named Sāvatthī. There that Blessed One now dwells, the Arahant, the Fully Self-Enlightened One (sammāsambuddha). For, Bāhiya, that Blessed One both is an arahant and teaches the Dhamma for arahantship." Then Bāhiya Dārucīriya, stirred to a sense of urgency by that deity, departed from Suppāraka that very instant and, staying only one night everywhere [along the way], approached the Blessed One where he was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
