[50] Then, not long after the Blessed One had departed, a cow with a young calf charged at Bāhiya Dārucīriya, knocked him down, and deprived him of life. Then the Blessed One, having walked for alms in Sāvatthī, when he had returned from the alms round after his meal, went out from the city together with many bhikkhus and saw that Bāhiya Dārucīriya had died. On seeing him, he addressed the bhikkhus: "Bhikkhus, take up the body of Bāhiya Dārucīriya; lift it onto a bier, carry it out, and cremate it, and build a stūpa (thūpa) for him. Bhikkhus, a companion of yours in the holy life has died."
"Yes, venerable sir," those bhikkhus replied to the Blessed One. Having lifted the body of Bāhiya Dārucīriya onto a bier, carried it out, cremated it, and built a stūpa for him, they approached the Blessed One; having approached, they sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the body of Bāhiya Dārucīriya has been burned, and a stūpa has been built for him. What is his destination (gati)? What is his future state (abhisamparāya)?"
"Bhikkhus, Bāhiya Dārucīriya was a wise man. He practised in accordance with the Dhamma, and he did not cause trouble in the matter of the Dhamma. Bhikkhus, Bāhiya Dārucīriya has attained final Nibbāna (parinibbuto)."
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"Where water and earth, fire and air find no footing,
there the stars do not gleam, the sun does not shine;
there the moon does not glow, there darkness is not found.
And when the sage (muni), a brahmin, has known for himself through sagehood (mona),
then from form (rūpa) and the formless, from pleasure and pain (sukhadukkhā) he is freed."
