[49] When this was said, the Blessed One said to Bāhiya Dārucīriya: "It is not yet the time, Bāhiya — we have entered among the houses for alms." For a second time Bāhiya Dārucīriya said to the Blessed One: "But it is hard to know, venerable sir, the dangers to the Blessed One's life or the dangers to my own life. Venerable sir, let the Blessed One teach me the Dhamma; let the Well-Farer (Sugata) teach the Dhamma, which would be for my welfare and happiness for a long time."

"Therefore, Bāhiya, you should train yourself thus: 'In the seen (diṭṭha) there will be merely the seen; in the heard (suta) there will be merely the heard; in the sensed (muta) there will be merely the sensed; in the cognized (viññāta) there will be merely the cognized.' Thus indeed, Bāhiya, should you train yourself. When, Bāhiya, for you in the seen there will be merely the seen, in the heard merely the heard, in the sensed merely the sensed, in the cognized merely the cognized, then, Bāhiya, you are not; and when, Bāhiya, you are not, then, Bāhiya, you are neither here nor beyond nor in between the two. Just this is the end of suffering (dukkha)."
Then, through this brief Dhamma teaching of the Blessed One, the mind (citta) of Bāhiya Dārucīriya was at that very moment liberated from the taints (āsava) through non-clinging. Then the Blessed One, having instructed Bāhiya Dārucīriya with this brief instruction, departed.
