[54] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jetavana, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.
Now on that occasion the Blessed One was honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, and was a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. The Saṅgha of bhikkhus (bhikkhusaṅgha), too, was honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, and was a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. But the wanderers of other sects (aññatitthiyā paribbājakā) were not honored, not respected, not esteemed, not venerated, and not revered, and were not recipients of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick.
Then those wanderers of other sects, unable to endure the honor shown to the Blessed One and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, on seeing bhikkhus in the village and in the forest, abused, reviled, provoked, and harassed them with rude, harsh words.
Then a number of bhikkhus approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, they sat down at one side. Sitting at one side, those bhikkhus said this to the Blessed One: "At present, venerable sir, the Blessed One is honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, and is a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. The Saṅgha of bhikkhus, too, is honored, respected, esteemed, venerated, and revered, and is a recipient of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. But the wanderers of other sects are not honored, not respected, not esteemed, not venerated, and not revered, and are not recipients of robes, almsfood, lodgings, and medicinal requisites for the sick. And now, venerable sir, those wanderers of other sects, unable to endure the honor shown to the Blessed One and to the Saṅgha of bhikkhus, on seeing the Saṅgha of bhikkhus in the village and in the forest, abuse, revile, provoke, and harass them with rude, harsh words."
Then the Blessed One, having understood the meaning of this, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"Touched by pleasure and pain (sukhadukkha) in village or in forest,
regard it neither as from oneself nor as from another;
contacts (phassa) touch one in dependence on acquisition (upadhi) —
by what could contacts touch one who is without acquisition?"
The fourth.
