[55] Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in the Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion a certain lay follower (upāsaka) from Icchānaṅgala had arrived at Sāvatthī on some business or other. Then that lay follower, having concluded that business in Sāvatthī, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down at one side. As he sat at one side, the Blessed One said to that lay follower: "After a long time indeed, lay follower, have you made this occasion — namely, for coming here."
"For a long time, venerable sir, I have wished to approach to see the Blessed One; but occupied as I was with various duties and obligations, I was not able to approach to see the Blessed One."
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"Happy indeed is he who has nothing,
one who has comprehended the Dhamma, of great learning;
see how one who has something is afflicted —
a person bound fast to people."
