[68] Now on that occasion some five hundred nymphs (accharā) with feet like doves (kakuṭapāda) had come to wait upon Sakka, lord of the devas. Then the Blessed One addressed the Venerable Nanda: "Nanda, do you see these five hundred dove-footed nymphs?" "Yes, venerable sir."
"What do you think, Nanda? Which are more beautiful, or more attractive, or more graceful — the Sakyan maiden, the loveliest in the land (janapadakalyāṇī), or these five hundred dove-footed nymphs?"
"Venerable sir, just as a scorched female monkey with her ears and nose cut off, even so, venerable sir, the Sakyan maiden, the loveliest in the land, set beside these five hundred nymphs, does not come into reckoning, does not amount even to a fraction, does not bear comparison; rather, these five hundred nymphs are more beautiful, more attractive, and more graceful."
"Delight, Nanda! Delight, Nanda! I am your guarantor (pāṭibhoga) for the obtaining of five hundred dove-footed nymphs."
"If, venerable sir, the Blessed One is my guarantor for the obtaining of five hundred dove-footed nymphs, then, venerable sir, I shall delight in the holy life (brahmacariya), O Blessed One."
Then the Blessed One took the Venerable Nanda by the arm and — just as a strong man might stretch out his bent arm or bend his outstretched arm — he vanished from among the Tāvatiṃsa devas and appeared in Jetavana. The bhikkhus heard: "The Venerable Nanda, it seems, the Blessed One's brother, the son of his maternal aunt, is living the holy life for the sake of nymphs; the Blessed One, it seems, is his guarantor for the obtaining of five hundred dove-footed nymphs."
