[69] Then the bhikkhus who were Venerable Nanda's companions addressed Venerable Nanda with the epithet "hireling" (bhataka) and the epithet "one who has been bought" (upakkita): "It seems Venerable Nanda is a hireling; it seems Venerable Nanda is one who has been bought. It is for the sake of nymphs (accharā) that he leads the holy life (brahmacariya); it seems the Blessed One is his guarantor (pāṭibhoga) for his obtaining of five hundred dove-footed nymphs."
Then Venerable Nanda, humiliated, ashamed, and disgusted by his companion bhikkhus' epithets of "hireling" and "one who has been bought," dwelling alone, withdrawn, heedful, ardent (ātāpī), and resolute, before long realized for himself with direct knowledge (abhiññā), in this very life, that unsurpassed culmination of the holy life for the sake of which clansmen rightly go forth from the home life into homelessness, and having entered upon it, he dwelled therein. He directly knew: "Destroyed is birth (jāti); the holy life has been lived; what had to be done has been done; there is no more of this state of being." And Venerable Nanda became one of the arahants.
