[70] Then, when the night was far advanced, a certain deity of surpassing beauty, illuminating the entire Jetavana, approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, that deity stood to one side. Standing to one side, that deity said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, the Venerable Nanda, the Blessed One's brother, the son of his maternal aunt, through the destruction of the taints (āsava), has realized for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind (cetovimutti) and liberation by wisdom (paññāvimutti), and having entered upon them, he dwells therein." And in the Blessed One too there arose the knowledge (ñāṇa): "Nanda, through the destruction of the taints, has realized for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon them, he dwells therein."
Then, when that night had passed, the Venerable Nanda approached the Blessed One; having approached and paid homage to the Blessed One, he sat down to one side. Sitting to one side, the Venerable Nanda said this to the Blessed One: "Venerable sir, as to the Blessed One's having stood surety for me for the obtaining of five hundred dove-footed nymphs — venerable sir, I release the Blessed One from that promise." "I too, Nanda, having encompassed your mind with my own mind, have known: 'Nanda, through the destruction of the taints, has realized for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon them, he dwells therein.' And a deity too informed me of this matter: 'Venerable sir, the Venerable Nanda, the Blessed One's brother, the son of his maternal aunt, through the destruction of the taints, has realized for himself with direct knowledge, in this very life, the taintless liberation of mind and liberation by wisdom, and having entered upon them, he dwells therein.' When, Nanda, your mind (citta) was liberated from the taints through non-clinging, then was I released from that promise."
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
"He who has crossed over the mire of sensuality,
who has crushed the thorn of sensuality,
who has attained the destruction of delusion (moha) —
that bhikkhu is not shaken amid pleasures and pains."
