[77] 5. Thus have I heard. On one occasion the Blessed One was dwelling at Sāvatthī, in Jeta's Grove, Anāthapiṇḍika's Park. Now on that occasion the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna was seated not far from the Blessed One, having folded his legs crosswise, having set his body erect, with mindfulness directed to the body (kāyagatā sati) well established within. The Blessed One saw the Venerable Mahāmoggallāna seated not far away, having folded his legs crosswise, having set his body erect, with mindfulness directed to the body well established within.
Then the Blessed One, having understood this matter, on that occasion uttered this inspired utterance (udāna):
With mindfulness directed to the body established,
restrained regarding the six bases of contact (phassāyatana),
a bhikkhu constantly concentrated (samāhita)
would know Nibbāna for himself.
The Fifth.
