[14] "You who stand with surpassing beauty (vaṇṇa), O goddess,
illuminating all the directions like the healing star (osadhī):
by what is such beauty yours? By what does this prosper for you here?
And there arise for you riches, whatever are dear to the mind.
I ask you, O goddess of great power:
when you were a human being, what merit (puñña) did you make?
By what are you of such blazing power,
and does your beauty shine forth in all the directions?"
That devatā, delighted at being questioned by Moggallāna,
when the question was asked, explained
of what deed (kamma) this is the fruit:
"When I was a human being among humans,
I was a daughter-in-law in my father-in-law's house.
I saw a bhikkhu free of dust, serene and unclouded;
full of confidence, with my own hands I gave him a portion.
Having given a lump of porridge (kummāsa),
I rejoice in the Nandana Grove.
By that is such beauty mine; by that does this prosper for me here;
and there arise for me riches, whatever are dear to the mind.
By that am I of such blazing power,
and my beauty shines forth in all the directions."
