Adorned, finely dressed, wearing a garland, anointed with sandalwood,
in the middle of the great road a woman, a dancing-girl, was dancing to the music.
I had entered for alms; as I went along I beheld her,
adorned and finely dressed, like a snare of Death laid out.
Then careful attention (yoniso manasikāra) arose in me;
the danger (ādīnava) became manifest; disenchantment (nibbidā) became established.¹
Then my mind (citta) was liberated — behold the excellent nature of the Dhamma!
The three true knowledges (vijjā) have been attained; the Buddha's teaching has been done.
