[334] 12.
"In need of a livelihood I went forth;
having received the full ordination (upasampadā),
I then gained faith (saddhā);
firm in energy (vīriya), I strove.
Willingly let this body break apart;
let the lumps of flesh dissolve;
let both my lower legs
drop off from the knee-joints.
I shall not eat, I shall not drink,
nor shall I go out from my dwelling,
nor shall I even lay down my side,
so long as the dart of craving (taṇhā) has not been drawn out.
As I dwelt thus — behold
my energy and exertion! —
the three true knowledges (tisso vijjā) have been attained;
the Buddha's teaching has been done."

Summary (uddāna):
Nāgasamāla and Bhagu,
Sabhiya and Nandaka too,
Jambuka and the Elder Senaka,
Sambhūta and Rāhula too,
and there is the Elder Candana:
these ten are disciples of the Buddha.
Dhammika, the Elder Sappaka,
and Mudita too — those three;
and the verses are fifty-two;
the elders, all told, are thirteen.
The Catukkanipāta (Book of the Fours) is finished.
