[335] 1.
A bhikkhu, having gone to a charnel ground (sīvathikā),
saw a woman thrown away,
cast aside in the cemetery,
being devoured, covered with worms.
For though some are filled with loathing
when they see her, dead and vile,
sensual lust (kāmarāga) became manifest in him;
he was as if blind to the oozing (corpse).
In less time than it takes rice to cook
I departed from that place;
mindful and clearly comprehending (satimā sampajāno),
I sat down to one side.
Then there arose in me
wise attention (yoniso manasikāra);
the danger (ādīnava) became manifest,
and disenchantment (nibbidā) became firmly established.
Then my mind (citta) was liberated —
see the excellence of the Dhamma (dhammasudhammatā)!
The three true knowledges (vijjā) have been attained;
the Buddha's teaching (sāsana) has been fulfilled.
