Intoxicated with the intoxication (mada) of birth,
with wealth and with lordship,
with figure, complexion, and form,
I went about drunk with intoxication.
No one did I conceive to be my equal,
nor anyone superior to myself —
a fool struck down by excessive conceit (atimāna),
obstinate, my banner hoisted high.
Neither mother nor father,
nor yet those regarded as venerable,
did I pay homage to — no one at all —
rigid with conceit (māna), devoid of respect.
Having seen the Guide (vināyaka), the foremost,
the best and highest of charioteers,
blazing like the sun,
revered by the Saṅgha of bhikkhus,
having cast away conceit and intoxication,
with a mind serene and clear,
I paid homage with my head
to the supreme among all beings.
Excessive conceit and the conceit of inferiority (omāna)
have been abandoned, thoroughly uprooted;
the conceit "I am" (asmimāna) has been cut off;
all the kinds of conceit are destroyed.
