"Ploughing the field with ploughs, sowing seeds upon the ground,
nourishing their wives and children, young men find wealth.
Why then do I — endowed with virtue (sīla), one who carries out the Teacher's teaching,
neither slack nor restless — not attain Nibbāna?
Having washed my feet, I turned my attention to the water;
and seeing the foot-washing water flow down from the high ground to the low,
I then concentrated my mind (citta), as one would an excellent thoroughbred horse.
Then, taking a lamp, I entered my dwelling;
having inspected the bed, I sat down upon the couch.
Then, taking the needle, I drew down the wick:
the liberation (vimokkha) of my mind was like the quenching (nibbāna) of the lamp."
