"Taking up pestles, young men pound grain;
nourishing their children and wives, young men find wealth.
Carry out the Buddha's teaching,
having done which one does not repent.
Quickly wash your feet
and sit down to one side;
devoted to serenity of mind (cetosamatha),
carry out the Buddha's teaching."
Having heard that utterance of hers, the instruction of Paṭācārā,
they washed their feet and sat down to one side;
devoted to serenity of mind,
they carried out the Buddha's teaching.
In the first watch of the night they recollected their former births;
in the middle watch of the night they purified the divine eye (dibbacakkhu);
in the last watch of the night they tore apart the mass of darkness (tamokkhandha).
Rising, they paid homage at her feet:
"Your instruction has been carried out.
As the gods of the Thirty honor Indra, unconquered in battle,
so shall we dwell with you at our head;
we bear the threefold true knowledge (tevijjā) and are free of taints (āsava)."
Thus indeed did these some thirty elder bhikkhunīs declare final knowledge (aññā) in the presence of Paṭācārā.
