[459] 1. Taking up pestles, young men pound the grain;
supporting their children and wives, young men find wealth.
Exert yourselves in the Buddha's teaching,
having done which one does not regret it afterwards;
quickly wash your feet
and sit down to one side.
Having established the mind (citta), one-pointed and well concentrated,
contemplate formations (saṅkhārā) as other, and not as self.
Having heard those words of hers, the instruction of Paṭācārā,
I washed my feet and sat down to one side.
In the first watch of the night I recollected my former births;
in the middle watch of the night I purified the divine eye (dibbacakkhu).
In the last watch of the night I burst asunder the mass of darkness (tamokkhandha);
then I rose up possessed of the three true knowledges (tevijjā): your instruction has been carried out.
As the Tidasa gods honour Sakka, unconquered in battle,
so, placing you at my head, I dwell,
possessed of the three true knowledges, free from taints (āsava).
