[463] "Vaḍḍha, may the thicket (vanatha) never at any time
arise for you in the world;
little son, do not again and again
be a partaker of suffering (dukkha).
For happily, Vaḍḍha, do the sages dwell —
unstirred, their doubts cut off,
grown cool, attained to taming —
free of taints (āsava).
The path (magga) practised by those seers,
for the attainment of vision (dassana),
for the making of an end of suffering —
that, Vaḍḍha, you should cultivate."
"With full confidence indeed you speak this matter,
O mother who bore me;
I think, dear mother, that surely
no thicket is found in you."
"Vaḍḍha, in regard to whatever conditioned things (saṅkhārā) there are —
low, exalted, or middling —
no thicket, even a minute one, even of minute measure,
is found in me.
All my taints are destroyed
as I meditate, heedful;
the three true knowledges (vijjā) have been attained;
the Buddha's teaching has been done."
"A splendid goad indeed did my mother apply to me —
verses connected with the highest goal (paramattha) —
even as one who is compassionate.
Having heard her word,
the admonition of her who bore me,
I came to a sense of urgency regarding the Dhamma (dhammasaṃvega),
for the attainment of security from bondage (yogakkhema).
Resolute in exertion,
unwearied night and day,
urged on by my mother,
I touched the supreme peace."
Vaḍḍhamātā (Vaḍḍha's Mother).
The Chapter of Nines (Navakanipāta) is concluded.
