"Mounted upon a great elephant (nāga), all white, an elephant supreme,
you roam about from grove to grove, attended by a troop of women,
illuminating all the quarters like the healing star.
By what is such beauty (vaṇṇa) yours? …
and (by what) does your beauty shine forth in every quarter?"
That son of the devas (devaputta), elated at being questioned by Moggallāna,
… of what deed (kamma) this is the fruit (phala):
"When I was a human being among humans,
I was a lay follower (upāsaka) of the One with Vision (cakkhumant);
I abstained from the destruction of life (pāṇātipāta),
I shunned in the world the taking of what was not given;
no drinker of intoxicants, I spoke no falsehood,
and I was content with my own wife;
with a confident mind (citta), respectfully,
I gave an abundant gift (dāna) of food and drink.
Because of that such beauty is mine …
and my beauty shines forth in every quarter."
