"Who now, with a divine vehicle, an all-white elephant,
resounding with the music of instruments being played, is honored in the sky?
Are you a devatā, or a gandhabba, or Sakka Purindada?
Not knowing you, we ask: how may we know who you are?"
"I am not a deva, nor a gandhabba, nor yet Sakka Purindada;
those devas who are called Sudhammā — of them I am one."
"We ask you, deva Sudhamma, extending wide our joined palms (añjali):
what deed did you do among humans, that you arise in Sudhammā?"
"Whoever should give a hall of sugar-cane, a hall of grass, or a hall of cloth —
having given any one of these three, he arises in Sudhammā."
