"Surely this word of yours is true indeed:
for how could giving (dāna) be without fruit?
Likewise the fruit of deeds well done and ill done — [how could it not be]?
And how could [giving] be merely a thing laid down by fools (dattupaññatta)?
Doing what, performing what, practicing what conduct,
resorting to what, by what virtue of austerity (tapoguṇa) —
declare this matter to me, O peacock king,
so that I may not fall into hell (niraya)."
