[2505] I was a king, sovereign of the Magadhans,
Duyyodhana by name, of great power.
Having understood that life is fleeting,
impermanent, of a nature to change,
with a mind (citta) of serene faith
I respectfully gave an abundant gift (dāna) of food and drink;
my house at that time became like an open well,
and ascetics and brahmins were satisfied.
Garlands, scents, and unguents,
lamps, vehicles, and lodging,
clothing, beds, and also food and drink —
these gifts we gave there with respect.
That was my vow (vata), that indeed my holy life (brahmacariya);
this is the result (vipāka) of that well-practised conduct:
by that very deed I have obtained this mansion (vimāna),
with abundant fare, with much food and drink.
