Saṅkhapālajātaka

Suttapiṭaka · Khuddakanikāya · Jātaka (1) · Vol. 27 · Section 2507

[2507] No great fear came upon me; they were not able to crush my power (tejo). For the principles of the good (sataṃ dhammāni), well proclaimed, are hard to transgress, like the boundary of the ocean. O Aḷāra, on the fourteenth and the fifteenth day I constantly observe the Uposatha (uposatha). Then there came sixteen Bhojaputtas, taking a rope and a stout snare. Splitting my nose and drawing the rope through it, the cruel men seized me on every side and led me away. Such suffering (dukkha) I endured, without violating the Uposatha.
