[1044] The women of the royal harem (orodhā) and the princes, the vessas (vesiyānā — merchants and farmers) and the brahmins, presented abundant food and drink to the sage (paṇḍita). Elephant-riders, guardsmen who stand in the ranks (anīkaṭṭhā), charioteers, and foot soldiers presented abundant food and drink to the sage. The country folk who had assembled, and the townsfolk who had assembled, presented abundant food and drink to the sage. The great multitude was filled with gladness on seeing that the sage had come; and when the sage had arrived, the waving of cloths went on.
