[1043] For a tree grew at the door of my house:
wisdom (paññā) was its trunk, its branches were made of virtue (sīla);
standing firm in the good (attha) and in the Dhamma, sagacious,
it bore kine as its fruit and was covered over with elephants, cattle, and horses.
Amid the resounding of dance, song, and music,
a man appeared who cut it off from its host;
now this very one has come back to our abode—
show reverence (apaciti) to this tree.
Whosoever have prospered by reason of me,
let them all today make it manifest:
presenting lavish gifts,
show reverence to this tree.
Whosoever in my realm are held in bonds,
let them all be released from their bonds;
even as this one has been set free from bondage,
so let these be loosed from their bonds.
Let them keep this month with ploughs uplifted;
let the brahmins (brāhmaṇā) feast on rice with meat;
let those who drink no strong drink—now entitled to strong drink—drink
from bowls filled full to overflowing.
Let them ever call out along the great highway;
and let them appoint keen watch throughout the realm,
so that none may do harm to one another—
show reverence to this tree.
