when the noble elephant (hatthināga) had been given away, the earth quaked.

when the noble elephant had been given away, the city then was thrown into turmoil.
The city was in confusion, and a clamor arose, vast and great,
when the noble elephant, bringer of prosperity to the realm of the Sivis, had been given away.
