[1086] [Vessantara] addressed King Sañjaya, the righteous and excellent:
"You have banished me, sire; I go to Mount Vaṅka.
For whatever beings, great king, have come to be, and whatever shall come to be,
still unsated with sensual pleasures, they go to the realm of Yama.
Making offerings in my own city, I wronged my own [people]:
at the word of the Sivis I am cast out from my own kingdom.
That misery I shall undergo
in a forest teeming with beasts of prey, the haunt of rhinoceros and leopard.
I do deeds of merit (puñña); you — sink in the mire!"
