[1198] He besprinkled with water the princess who had fallen there;
and knowing that she had revived, he then said this to her:
"At the very outset, Maddī, I did not wish to tell you of this suffering (dukkha):
a poor, aged brahmin beggar had come to the house.
To him I have given the children. Do not fear, Maddī — take heart.
Look at me, Maddī; do not look for the children; do not lament so grievously.
While we live we shall obtain children again, and may we be in good health.
Children, cattle, and grain, and whatever other wealth is in the house —
a good man (sappurisa), on seeing a supplicant come, should give these as a gift (dāna).
Rejoice, Maddī, in my supreme gift — the gift of the little children."
