[273] Whosoever are slayers of women, who consort with the wives of others,
who betray their friends, and who revile the virtuous of good vows —
all of these, with the miser as the fifth, are base men;
therefore, without having given, I would not drink even water.
So to woman or to man
I shall give the gift (dāna) extolled by the wise;
for those here who have faith (saddhā), who are responsive to entreaty (vadaññū),
and who are rid of miserliness (macchariya), are esteemed as pure and truthful.
