[301] Friend Puṇṇamukha, there are these four that should not be lodged in another's family: an ox, a milch cow, a vehicle, and a wife — the four possessions that a wise man should not let dwell away from his own house.
An ox, a milch cow, a vehicle,
and a wife — one should not lodge these in the family of relatives;
those who have no vehicle of their own use up the chariot,
by overdriving they kill the bull,
by milking they kill the calf,
and a wife goes astray in the family of relatives.
