[597] As a vehicle that is borrowed, as wealth that is borrowed,
even so is this very attainment (sampadā) which comes owing to another's giving.
And I do not desire that which comes owing to another's giving;
the merits (puñña) done by my own self — that is wealth inalienably my own (āveṇiya).
So I, having gone among human beings, shall do abundant wholesome (kusala) deeds
by giving (dāna), by even conduct (samacariyā),
by restraint (saññama), and by self-taming (dama) —
having done which, one is happy and does not repent afterward.
