[693] Having heard that word of his, the serpents (uraga) of many hues
entered Bārāṇasī, and they harmed no one.
In dwellings, in pools, on streets and at crossroads,
on treetops and over gateways they hung, stretched out.
Seeing them hanging there, many women wailed aloud,
beholding the nāgas with hoods spread, hissing again and again.
Bārāṇasī became afflicted and anguished;
raising their arms, they cried out: "Give your daughter to the king!"
