[81] Then they brought the prince, Dīghāvu, increaser of the realm;
and seeing him, the king addressed his only son, the delight of his heart:
"Sixty thousand villages, complete in every way —
take charge of them, my son: I hand over the kingdom to you.
This very day I shall go forth (pabbajissāmi) — who knows whether death may come tomorrow?
Let me not, like the witless crow, fall under the sway of sensual pleasures.
Sixty thousand elephants adorned with every ornament,
tuskers with girths of gold, clothed in trappings of gold,
mounted by mahouts with lance and goad in hand —
take charge of them, my son: I hand over the kingdom to you.
This very day I shall go forth — who knows whether death may come tomorrow?
Let me not, like the witless crow, fall under the sway of sensual pleasures.
Sixty thousand horses adorned with every ornament,
thoroughbreds by birth, Sindh steeds, swift carriers,
mounted by riders bearing short swords and bows —
take charge of them, my son: I hand over the kingdom to you.
This very day I shall go forth — who knows whether death may come tomorrow?
Let me not, like the witless crow, fall under the sway of sensual pleasures.
Sixty thousand chariots, fully fitted out, with banners raised,
covered with leopard hide and with tiger skin as well, adorned with every ornament,
mounted by charioteers with bows in hand, clad in leather armour —
take charge of them, my son: I hand over the kingdom to you.
This very day I shall go forth — who knows whether death may come tomorrow?
Let me not, like the witless crow, fall under the sway of sensual pleasures.
Sixty thousand milch cows, red-brown, with noble bulls as lords of the herd —
take charge of them, my son: I hand over the kingdom to you.
This very day I shall go forth — who knows whether death may come tomorrow?
Let me not, like the witless crow, fall under the sway of sensual pleasures.
Sixteen thousand women adorned with every ornament,
in variegated garments and adornments, wearing jewelled earrings —
take charge of them, my son: I hand over the kingdom to you.
This very day I shall go forth — who knows whether death may come tomorrow?
Let me not, like the witless crow, fall under the sway of sensual pleasures."
