[847] Having heard the words of Kassapa, Alāta said this:
"As the venerable one declares, that very thing pleases me.
I too remember a former birth through which I myself have passed:
in the past I was named Piṅgala, a cruel slaughterer of cattle.
In flourishing Bārāṇasī much evil was done by me;
many living beings were slain by me — buffaloes, pigs, and goats.
Passing away from there, I have been born here in the prosperous family of a general.
Surely there is no fruit in evil, seeing that I have not gone to hell (niraya)."
