Just as there were Dhataraṭṭha, Vessāmitta, and Aṭṭhaka,
Yamadatti, Usinnara, (and King Sivi),
attendants upon ascetics and brahmins —
these and other kings besides, who have gone to the realm of heaven (sagga) —
even so, O lord of the earth, shun unrighteousness (adhamma)
and practice righteousness (dhamma);
and let men with food in hand make proclamation
in your palace and in your city:
"Who is hungry? And who is thirsty?
Who would have a garland? Who unguent?
Who, being naked, will clothe himself
in garments of various dyes?
Who will take a parasol for the road,
and sandals soft and fine?"
Thus at evening and at morning
let them make proclamation in your city.
Do not put to toil, as before,
a man worn with age, nor ox and horse grown old;
and grant him still his due maintenance:
while in his strength he rendered service.
