[117] **He, still with acquisitions (upadhi), is purified by another [path]** — by another path, an impure path, a wrong practice (micchāpaṭipadā), a way that does not lead out; apart from the establishments of mindfulness (satipaṭṭhāna), apart from the right exertions (sammappadhāna), apart from the bases of success (iddhipāda), apart from the faculties (indriya), apart from the powers (bala), apart from the factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga), apart from the noble eightfold path (magga), a person is purified, thoroughly purified, completely purified; is freed, thoroughly freed, completely freed. **Still with acquisitions** means: with lust (rāga), with hatred, with delusion, with conceit (māna), with craving (taṇhā), with view (diṭṭhi), with defilement (kilesa), with clinging (upādāna). Therefore it is said: "He, still with acquisitions, is purified by another [path]."
