[144] **Not lusting with lust (rāga), not attached to dispassion (virāga)**: "Attached by lust" is said of those who are attached, greedy, bound, infatuated, engrossed, adhering, cleaving, and entangled in the five strands of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa). "Attached to dispassion" is said of those who are attached, greedy, bound, infatuated, engrossed, adhering, cleaving, and entangled in the form-sphere and formless-sphere attainments (samāpatti). **Not lusting with lust, not attached to dispassion**: when lust for sensual pleasures (kāmarāga), greed for fine-material existence (rūparāga), and greed for immaterial existence (arūparāga) have been abandoned, cut off at the root, made like a palm stump deprived of its base, brought to non-existence, and rendered of a nature not to arise again in the future — to that extent one is not lusting with lust, not attached to dispassion.
