[158] **Therefore a bhikkhu should not depend on the seen, the heard, or the sensed, or on virtue and vows (sīlabbata):** "Therefore" means for that reason, from that cause, owing to that condition, from that source, a bhikkhu should not depend upon, should not grasp, should not adhere to, should not cling to the seen, or purity through the seen; the heard, or purity through the heard; the sensed, or purity through the sensed; virtue (sīla), or purity through virtue; vows (vata), or purity through vows. Hence, "Therefore a bhikkhu should not depend on the seen, the heard, or the sensed, or on virtue and vows." Therefore the Blessed One said:
The skilled declare that too to be a tie (gantha),
depending upon which one sees another as inferior.
Therefore a bhikkhu should not depend
on the seen, the heard, or the sensed, or on virtue and vows.
