[162] **"One should not conceive oneself as inferior, or even as superior"** (hīno na maññetha visesi vāpi): one should not bring oneself forward, thinking, "I am inferior," on account of birth, or on account of clan, … or on account of any ground whatsoever; one should not bring oneself forward, thinking, "I am superior," on account of birth, or on account of clan, … or on account of any ground whatsoever. Hence, "one should not conceive oneself as inferior, or even as superior." Therefore the Blessed One said:
One should not form even a view in the world
by knowledge (ñāṇa), or even by virtue and vows;
one should not bring oneself forward as "equal";
one should not conceive oneself as inferior, or even as superior.
