[192] **"By death, too, that is given up" (maraṇenapi taṃ pahīyati):** "Death" (maraṇa) is the passing away of those various beings from this or that class of beings — the falling away, the breaking up, the disappearance, mortality (maccu), death, the completion of one's time (kālakiriyā), the breaking up of the aggregates (khandhā), the laying down of the carcass, the cutting off of the life-faculty (jīvitindriya). **"That":** what pertains to form (rūpa), what pertains to feeling (vedanā), what pertains to perception (saññā), what pertains to volitional formations (saṅkhārā), what pertains to consciousness (viññāṇa). **"Is given up":** is given up, is abandoned, is relinquished; it disappears, it dissolves. For this too has been said:
Riches forsake a mortal even beforehand,
or the mortal forsakes them earlier still;
those who possess riches, desirers of pleasures, are not everlasting —
therefore I do not sorrow in the time for sorrow.
The moon rises, waxes full, and wanes;
the sun, having set, departs;
the worldly conditions (lokadhammā) are known to me, O enemy —
therefore I do not sorrow in the time for sorrow.
By death, too, that is given up.
