[206] **"Being greedy, they do not abandon sorrow, lamentation, and stinginess (macchariya) regarding what is cherished as 'mine'"** — **Sorrow (soka)**: for one touched by loss of relatives, or touched by loss of wealth, or touched by loss through illness, or touched by loss of virtue, or touched by loss of view, for one who meets with one or another loss, or is touched by one or another painful circumstance, there is sorrow, sorrowing, sorrowfulness, inner sorrow, inner deep sorrow, inner burning, inner deep burning, the consuming anguish of the mind, grief, the dart of sorrow.
**Lamentation (parideva)**: for one touched by loss of relatives … (…pe…) or touched by loss of view, for one who meets with one or another loss, or is touched by one or another painful circumstance, there is crying, lamenting, the act of crying, the act of lamenting, the state of having cried, the state of having lamented, verbal utterance, babbling, prattling, wailing, the act of wailing, the state of wailing.
**Stinginess**: there are five kinds of stinginess — stinginess regarding dwellings, stinginess regarding families, stinginess regarding gain, stinginess regarding praise (vaṇṇa), stinginess regarding dhammas. Such stinginess as this, the act of being stingy, the state of being stingy, avariciousness, niggardliness, meanness, the ungenerous grip of the mind (citta) — this is called stinginess. Furthermore, stinginess regarding the aggregates (khandha) is stinginess; stinginess regarding the elements (dhātu) is stinginess; stinginess regarding the sense bases (āyatana) is stinginess. Grasping — this is called stinginess.
**Greed (gedha)** is a term for craving (taṇhā): that is, lust, passion … (…pe…) covetousness, greed (lobha), the unwholesome root.
**"Cherishing as 'mine' (mamatta)"**: there are two kinds of cherishing as 'mine' — cherishing as 'mine' through craving and cherishing as 'mine' through view … (…pe…) this is cherishing as 'mine' through craving … (…pe…) this is cherishing as 'mine' through view.
Even those who suspect the seizure of an object cherished as 'mine' sorrow; they sorrow while it is being seized; they sorrow when it has been seized. Even those who suspect the alteration of an object cherished as 'mine' sorrow; they sorrow while it is altering; they sorrow when it has altered. Even those who suspect the seizure of an object cherished as 'mine' lament; they lament while it is being seized; they lament when it has been seized. Even those who suspect the alteration of an object cherished as 'mine' lament; they lament while it is altering; they lament when it has altered. They guard, protect, and take possession of the object cherished as 'mine'; they cherish it as 'mine' and are stingy over it. They sorrow over the object cherished as 'mine'; they do not abandon sorrow, they do not abandon lamentation, they do not abandon stinginess, they do not abandon greed — they do not give them up, do not dispel them, do not make an end of them, do not bring them to non-existence. Therefore it is said: "Being greedy, they do not abandon sorrow, lamentation, and stinginess regarding what is cherished as 'mine.'"
