[237] **"Whoever engages in sexual intercourse":** "sexual intercourse" (methunadhamma) is that which is the ignoble practice (asaddhamma) … ; for that reason it is called sexual intercourse. **"Whoever engages in sexual intercourse"** means: at a later time, that person, having renounced the Buddha, the Dhamma, the Saṅgha, and the training (sikkhā), and having reverted to the lower state, engages in, pursues, cultivates, and indulges in sexual intercourse — hence, "whoever engages in sexual intercourse."
