[238] **"Like a careering vehicle is he in the world"** (yānaṃ bhantaṃva taṃ loke): "Vehicle" (yāna) means an elephant-vehicle, a horse-vehicle, an ox-vehicle, a goat-vehicle, a ram-vehicle, a camel-vehicle, a donkey-vehicle. Careering — untamed, untrained, undisciplined — it takes the wrong road; it mounts upon what is uneven, upon a stump or upon a rock; it breaks both the vehicle and the rider; it falls even into a precipice. Just as that careering vehicle, untamed, untrained, undisciplined, takes the wrong road, even so that one who has strayed (vibbhantaka), the counterpart of a careering vehicle, takes the wrong road: he grasps wrong view … he grasps wrong concentration. Just as that careering vehicle, untamed, untrained, undisciplined, mounts upon what is uneven, upon a stump or upon a rock, even so that one who has strayed, the counterpart of a careering vehicle, mounts upon uneven bodily action, mounts upon uneven verbal action, mounts upon uneven mental action, mounts upon uneven destruction of life, mounts upon uneven taking of what is not given, mounts upon uneven sexual misconduct, mounts upon uneven false speech, mounts upon uneven divisive speech, mounts upon uneven harsh speech, mounts upon uneven frivolous talk, mounts upon uneven covetousness, mounts upon uneven ill will, mounts upon uneven wrong view, mounts upon uneven volitional formations, mounts upon the uneven five strands of sensual pleasure, mounts upon the uneven hindrances (nīvaraṇa). Just as that careering vehicle, untamed, untrained, undisciplined, breaks even the rider, even so that one who has strayed, the counterpart of a careering vehicle, breaks himself in hell, breaks himself in the animal realm, breaks himself in the realm of ghosts, breaks himself in the human world, breaks himself in the deva world. Just as that careering vehicle, untamed, untrained, undisciplined, falls even into a precipice, even so that one who has strayed, the counterpart of a careering vehicle, falls into the precipice of birth, falls into the precipice of aging, falls into the precipice of illness, falls into the precipice of death, falls into the precipice of sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair.¹ **"In the world"**: in the world of the states of loss … in the human world. Therefore it is said: "Like a careering vehicle is he in the world."
