[245] *Having heard the reproach of others, such a one becomes abashed* — **Others**: preceptors, or teachers, or those who share the same preceptor, or those who share the same teacher, or friends, or acquaintances, or intimates, or companions admonish him: "That, friend, is a loss for you; that is ill gained by you — that, having gained so eminent a Teacher, having gone forth in a Dhamma and Discipline so well proclaimed, having gained such a company of noble ones, for the sake of low sexual intercourse you have renounced the Buddha, the Dhamma, the Saṅgha, and the training, and have reverted to the lower life. You had no faith (saddhā) in wholesome dhammas; you had no shame (hiri) in wholesome dhammas; you had no moral dread (ottappa) in wholesome dhammas; you had no energy (vīriya) in wholesome dhammas; you had no mindfulness (sati) in wholesome dhammas; you had no wisdom (paññā) in wholesome dhammas." Having heard, having listened to, having learned, having considered, and having scrutinized their words, their speech, their exposition, their instruction, he becomes abashed — oppressed, stricken, distressed, dejected.
**Such a one**: such, of such a kind, so situated, of that sort, of that likeness — namely, that one who has strayed away. Thus: *having heard the reproach of others, such a one becomes abashed.* Therefore the Blessed One said:
Beset by thoughts, he broods like a wretch;
having heard the reproach of others, such a one becomes abashed.
